The opening of the Skolt Sámi Heritage House and the Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation Summer Exhibition launches the summer events of Sevettijärvi

The Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation and the Sámi Museum Siida open together the summer season in Sevettijärvi on Thursday June 9. The Skolt Sámi Heritage House and its open-air museum and the Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation Summer Exhibition are open all summer, with free entrance for visitors. The Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation Summer Exhibition held at the Village Workshop will open its doors at 10 a.m. on June 9. This year’s exhibition includes a mitten and sock collection of almost a hundred pairs of items, collected by Elli Rantala. The mittens and socks of the exhibition were mostly collected in the Skolt Sámi villages of Sevettijärvi, Nellim and Keväjärvi in the 1970s and 1980s. The exhibition also displays picture boards from the photography exhibit Tuõddri Peeʹrel – Pearls from the Tundra arranged earlier by the Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation, as well as items from a handicraft exhibition produced by the foundation. Local handicrafts will be at sale in the exhibition.

The exhibition and the open-air museum of the Skolt Sámi Heritage House introduce visitors to Skolt Sámi culture and history. This year, the exhibition also displays a root-sewn boat that was completed last autumn; the boat was made using a traditional Skolt Sámi crafts technique of fastening parts together with the help of roots. A few of the boat builders will attend the Opening Day ceremony, demonstrating the root stitching technique from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will also be a flea market and a cafe arranged by villagers at the Heritage House. The flea market will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the cafe from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

During the day, there will also be a leu´dd singing performance at the Heritage House. From 3 to 4 p.m., the audience will hear at the Village Workshop about a course on dyeing with plants that will be held in September.

There will be several events and occasions arranged together by the Sámi Museum Siida and the Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation in Sevettijärvi during the summer. One forthcoming event is the Sevetti Day that will be arranged on July 28 in connection with the Inari Weeks, with Metsähallitus also contributing to the arrangements. The Skolt Sámi Heritage House will have its Autumn Day on September 8, and, on the same weekend, there will be a course on natural dyeing on the shore by the Skolt Sámi House. The Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation will also arrange several working occasions for volunteers at the Skolt Sámi House in the summer. – The volunteers will have the pleasure of working together, but they will also get tasty food and every now and then even the chance to take a sauna, promises Chiara Seri, the representative of the foundation.

The Skolt Sámi Heritage House, which is run by the Sámi Museum, is open daily from June 1 to September 25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. In addition to the exhibition, the Heritage House has a small museum shop.

The Skolt Sámi Cultural Foundation Summer Exhibition is open on weekdays from June 9 to August 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Welcome!
