“We all can support the Skolt Saami in preserving their wonderful culture,” appeals Antti Pentikäinen
“We know that the Skolt Saami have secured their existence and their right to their own home area by negotiating with rulers since the 16th century. Throughout history, this people belonging to the eastern Saami language group and its lands and waters have been subject to a lot of external pressure, as a result of which Skolt Saami have fragmented into the territories of three modern states. The situation of the Skolt Saami have often been very difficult, but still this nation of about a thousand people has managed to keep its rich, ancient cultural heritage and the Skolt Saami language alive through these challenging times. The Skolt Sámi Village Meeting and the Skolt Saami Cultural Foundation are working tirelessly to preserve the language and culture, and it is high time for the rest of us to join in supporting them,” says Research Professor Antti Pentikäinen.
Antti Pentikäinen turns 50 in October and has decided to organize a birthday fundraiser to support the Skolt Saami culture, community and the Skolt Saami language. “I also want to strengthen the culture of reparations in Finland, where everyone should concretely decide to do something for the benefit of our indigenous Saami people,” says Pentikäinen about the background of the fundraiser.
The funds collected from this birthday fundraiser will be used primarily for the serve the native Skolt Saami people e.g. by publishing printed wall calendar in the Skolt Saami language for the year 2023 and for the development of the Skolt Saami calendar. The secondary objective is the revival of Skolt Saami seining fishing in the Skolt Saami Land.
